We’re Dreaming of a White & Black Winter

A message to our winter patrons:
Like many of you we really enjoy the chalets and the area around Moose Pass in the winter. Now that we own the chalets, we have to deal with the hard numbers. The reality is the chalets are significantly more expensive to operate in the winter and the number of rental days is dramatically lower than the summer to spread those costs across.

Unfortunately, last winters’ operating costs ended up in the red. We’re trying again this winter and hope to be in the black come Spring. There is a simple mathematical equation  that governs here: do we come out ahead by staying open or by closing for the winter. We hope that equation will balance out on the plus side for staying open.
To achieve that we’ve made some improvements and some necessary adjustments.

This summer we’ve continued making improvements to make the chalets more useable and enjoyable. We’ve widened the driveway so that trailers can make the turn easier. We’ve created more parking at the Steller Jay, and built a deck and moved the hot tub out front where there’s no better view from a hot tub in Alaska.

The chalets are vacation rentals. Food and bottled water can be provided by paying the summer rate, but are not included in the winter rate. Stays of 1-3 days will require a modest cleaning fee.

Most importantly, we need to increase our number of rental days. Weekend only rentals don’t pay the bills at winter rates, so we’re hoping to find folks who like the peace and quiet of mid-week, and the trails and fresh snow to themselves.

You’ll still find the chalets an incomparable getaway destination, and a bargain for their location and amenities. If you find a comparable accommodation at a lower cost, we’d be interested in hearing about it.

Thanks for your continuing patronage. We hope the chalets can be a memorable part of your family’s winter get-away this year.

Sincerely,

The Steeles
